Reading List User Requirements

  1. A lecturer has prepared a list of books, journal articles and website relevant to students on a module he is teaching. The list is divided up by format: books, articles and websites. All the books can be found on the library catalogue.
  2. Another lecturer recommends books that are newly published and not yet in the library. Her list is arranged by the week for which each item is most relevant. Each week has essential and recommended reading.
  3. A student logs in with his standard university username and password. This automatically calls up his modules. He adds tags to the articles he has just read, recommends them with a star rating and adds new articles that he has found himself. Having finished writing his assignment he outputs a report of all the items tagged ‘april essay’ in Harvard citation format to add as the bibliography.
  4. A tutor is creating a reading list for a new course she is leading. She uploads the citations stored in EndNote (her preferred citation management tool) to create a pool of material from which to draw for the live reading list. The pool is topped up from time to time when she comes across interesting material on the Internet. These are added with a button on her browser, del.icio.us style.
  5. A librarian wants a report of all the books that appear on 2 or more reading lists so that enough copies of these books can be on the shelves when the students arrive for the new term.

  1. A lecturer wants to add a book to a reading list. He searches for it and an entry is found in the library catalogue. The citation and link to the catalogue are added to the list.
  2. A second book is not found in the catalogue. The citation details are retrieved from other bibliographic sources and a message sent to the relevant subject librarian about the out-of stock item and the list in which it appears.
  3. A lecturer want to add an article to a list. She types in the DOI number for the article. The citation details are retrieved using the CrossRef API and an OpenURL link is created.
  4. A lecturer wants to build a readinglist. He types in a search term and a federated search is performed across a number of databases. He filters the results and adds selected items to the pool of citations from which the list will be built.
